Original Medicare
Original Medicare includes Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance), including many preventive services. You can generally use doctors and hospitals that accept Medicare anywhere in the U.S. It does not cover most outpatient prescription drugs; separate Part D coverage may help.
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage is a Medicare-approved private alternative. Most plans include Part D; those with prescription drugs are MAPD plans. Use our tool to compare these specific plans; note that self-enrollment is only available for MAPD options. Costs and networks vary, so check details before enrolling.
Medicare Supplements
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) works with Original Medicare to help pay certain deductibles, coinsurance and copayments. It cannot pay Medicare Advantage costs. Policies sold today do not include prescription drug coverage. Eligibility, underwriting and switching rules are separate from Medicare annual enrollment.
Part D Prescription Coverage
Stand-alone Part D plans may accompany Original Medicare. Our online tool is reserved for MAPD plans; for stand-alone Part D or Medigap, please contact us directly. Most Medicare Advantage plans include Part D, so do not assume you can add a stand-alone drug plan to any Medicare Advantage plan.
